Progressive Field, more than a stadium
Built in 1994, Progressive Field was part of Cleveland's "rebirth".
Progressive Field along with Gund Arena make up the Gateway Sports
and Entertainment complex. This is considered the "crowning
jewel" in the city's landscape. Along with a great new
place to watch baseball, the complex brought with it an urban
development plan which brought in new business and sparked an
economic growth in downtown Cleveland.
Did you know?
The stadium was partly funded by a 15 year "luxury tax"
on alcohol and cigarettes sold in Cuyahoga County.
The first regular season game to take place at Progressive was April
4, 1994. The Indians hosted the Seattle Mariners.
Total cost of construction was $175 million. The Indians owner
financed 52% of the construction costs.
